Take a tour of the Maryland Neuroimaging Center, where you can get a brain scan!
Welcome to the Maryland Neuroimaging Center!
A researcher will bring you into the lobby of the building.
We will go to the library to fill out consent and assent forms. A scientist will explain the activities that you are going to do, and you can sign an assent form while your parent signs a consent form. This is an official way of saying, "Yes, this study sounds like fun, and I'd like to participate!”
After that, we will go in the mock scanner room to practice the activities you will be doing during your scan. You'll start by practicing a few activities while sitting at the computer.
Once you practice outside of the pretend scanner, you will get a chance to lay down inside the pretend scanner and experience how it feels to do activities, listen to the sounds, and lay still while watching movies inside.
When you are done with practice, we will go to the MRI control room to make sure it is safe for you to go inside the real scanner. We will use a metal-detecing wand to make sure that you do not have any metal in your body or on your clothes.
Once you are all ready and MRI-safe, we will head into the real scanner to take your brain scan while you do activities and watch movies.
Once your scan is complete, we will go back to the library to print out your brain picture so you can take it with you! We can put your brain picture in a photo frame or on a t-shirt.
At the end of your visit, we will explain the next part of the study to you and your family member, and walk you back to the lobby where you came in.
That's all, folks!
